A third year Independent Craft and Design student, Ashley Cartagena, a senior at Bayonne High School, designed and made her own prom dress. She also designed and made her hair décor as well as her prom date’s necktie. Under the guidance of Craft and Design Instructor June Mohovich, Ashley was hereby able to successfully prepare for a career in her chosen field of Fashion Design. She will be studying at the International Academy of Technology in Seattle Washington this fall. Bayonne High School offers classes in Craft and Design1, Craft and Design 2 and Independent Study. Students may elect to take Craft and Design 1 in which they have the opportunity to complete projects in various craft materials using a variety of techniques with an emphasis on manipulative skills. The Elements of Art and the Principles of Design are carefully explored. Students will also learn to develop aesthetic awareness and an understanding for the process of critique by exercising verbal and observational skills while preparing them with work-place readiness skills.
Craft and Design 2 builds on the knowledge already learned. Students electing this course are expected to demonstrate above average design skills as well as quality craftsmanship.
Independent Art allows the student to produce projects in his or her chosen field.
“Here at Bayonne High School students have the opportunity to explore their artistic ability in crafts and design. In addition to Mrs. Mohovich, Mrs. Regina Plesniarski is currently one of our Crafts and Design 1 instructors,” commented Mrs. Joan H. Rosen, Director of Music and Art for the Bayonne Public Schools. “The entry level of this course satisfies the New Jersey State High School requirement for Visual and Performing Arts.
