CO -ED SOFTBALL STARTS THIS WEEKEND May 2nd

Did You Know? The Bayonne Recreation website is currently ranked #31 in the COUNTRY in league sites! ...Great Job!!!

 Co-Ed Softball Pre-Season Power Rankings-2009

Bayonne Dept of Recreation

1. Big Apple Bruisers

- Brancatella Brothers, Kochanski, Mackow, Parlatti, Lewandoski, Bonner, Buzinkai, Macri. Remember these names.

2. Underdawgs

- Champions of the past 2 seasons. Departure of Kochanski definitely hurts the team. Chris Otero will have to step up and prove why he’s one of the league’s best. Still have a powerful team. Tina Venuilla, 2008 Female Athlete of the Year, may be league’s most feared feared female player.

3. Wicked Riders

- The old Brewers. New faces. New team. New Uniforms. Ajosa Sr. will have this team ready to play. Ajosa Jr. looking for a MVP type season at SS. Yurchak Brothers will be key. Danielle Dugan will be a spark.

4. Camp Anawana

- Last season’s surprise team. Will come ready to play. Frank Flynn strong hitter, great fielder. Dave Rubin will be in running for Coach of the Year. Can’t forget about Tara Lake.

5. Stix N’ Chix

- Will make a serious run to the title. New team, but have experienced players in Co-Ed Softball. Angel & Gisella Cruz can dominate at any time. The Nesheiwat sisters, Dalal & Tonia, can play. Johnny Gonzalez can hit the long ball.

6. GS Community Bank

- Same team name from ’08, but new players. Christina Conti will lead this team, as a coach and a player. Maureen Boyle good hitter. Matt Dragone, Rob Tully will have to step up. Nice addition of Catherine & Mike Cerreta.

7. Team Punishment

- Athletic team, led by “The Wayne.” Laura Ayala key player. Rob Balis, Travis Camacho, and Luis Simo lethal trio. Danielle Dundas and Mary Doolan smart players. Does this team have enough to win a championship? Team Chemistry and behavior a question mark.

8. XPRESS2U

- Do not take this team lightly. Vanessa Marko can flat out play. Anthony Gonzalez, Cindy Gonzalez, & Frankie Gonzalez great players. First year playing together. Don’t be surprised if you see this team at the top at the end.

9. Secret Country Horseshoes

- New team. Have some athletic players in Denis Peguero, Steve Stiller, Jackie Schnorrbusch, and Jason Tyrpack. Will need to learn to play together in this competitive league.

10. Clarks 19th Hole

- Donna Doyle a great coach and a great Co-Ed Softball player. Matt Patella, Kevin Elam, and Pepe Smith can hit. Don’t take this team lightly. They’ll sneak up in the standings real quick.

11. Smokies

- Veteran team. Always in the game. Will be led by Chris Munoz, John & James Soto. Jan Apfelbaum will contribute.

12. Herbert’s Arm & Navy

- Another veteran team. Coach Christine Tricoli will always put a competitive team out on the field. The Addition of Anthony Piscitelli is big. They’ll make the playoffs. Do they have enough weapons for a title?

13. A Good Catch

- Lacey Skowronski star of team and possibly the league. She will be the reason for this team’s success. Coach Sal Longo will need to get his team ready each week. Was it mentioned that Anthony Smith is on this team? Wow.

14. Yardwork

- Here’s a team with some athletic names – Halsey, Pesantez, Colletta, Palumbo. Can they play together? Coaches Richard Sudimack and Sean Baran will be ready, but will they be ready every game?

15. The Big D’s

- New, young team. Coach Mike Long has put together a nice team. Mike Kspepko, Adam Christie, Matt Tarbett, Jamie Smith, and Jen Bodayle can all play the game. A #15 ranking may be wrong for this team, but they will need to prove themselves.

16. Don Squad

- Ryan Gibbons has submitted a team with players who may be new to the game. Do they have enough to win? Gibbons will always put a winning product out there. Stay tuned for this team.

17. Trudge

- New team. They will need to make a name for themselves. Ronnie Carr has a roster full of players. Who will standout for this team?

18. Rye Whiskey Bar

- Another new team with some new players. Although they are ranked #18, they will certainly put up a fight. Coaches Stephen Carr & Maureen Pona very organized and that what may be needed to win. Joe VanHorn, David Franco, & Matt Metzendorf will all contribute.

Pilovsky throws Perfect game in Bayonne Cal Ripken Opener.
By Dave L
Brandon Pilovsky will go down in the Bayonne Cal Ripken baseball history record books as he became the first player in it’s 12 year history to throw a perfect game. Brandon who plays for Amadeo & Miller in the major league division was spectacular as his team defeated Chris Corner 5-0 in the Bayonne Cal Ripken league opener.

Brandon struck out 9,allowing no hits, no walks and no errors by his defense and was totally dominant with only a few harmless ground balls hit by Chris Corner.

Brandon coming off a spectacular sophomore season last year was a major reason his team won the championship in 2008 and he is quickly showing why he is one of the premiere pitchers in Bayonne, one of the best in years.

Last year Brandon won the prestigious Cy Young award which goes to the league’s best pitcher and according to the league’s Vice President, Mike Miselis, who witnessed the perfect game and who has watched this young man develop into a big time player, it’s no surprise.
“When this kid was only 6 yrs old in the rookie league division on Valley National Bank, we all saw a special young boy. He was fearless then when he was up against the league’s best 9 year olds and right now without a doubt he is one of the toughest competitors the league has ever seen, said Miselis.

Brandon currently attends All Saints Catholic Academy and is in the 7th grade where he is an honor student. He plans on attending St. Peters Prep High School in two more years and hopes to go onto Boston College and dreams of getting drafted by the Boston Red Sox.
